Achieving Economic Self- Sufficiency for

Persons with Disabilities


Achieving Economic Self-sufficiency for Persons with Disabilities is a Project implemented by Sri Lanka Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled (SLFRD) in collaboration with Motivation UK and funded by USAID.

The ESS project focuses on economic inclusion of people with disabilities who are excluded from the formal labour market and the informal economy.

The aim of the project is to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities and their families by increasing household income, both through placement in formal employment and increased opportunities for vocational training and financing of small businesses.

Methodology:

  1. delivering disability inclusion training and support services to local businesses and economic development NGOs
  2. preparing people with disabilities for employment, including education about their rights and responsibilities.
  3. Conduct awareness programs to show the need for and benefits of disability inclusion
  4. Identify 90 local businesses, vocational training organizations and microfinance institutions
  5. Deliver an inclusion assessment for 90 organizations followed by a customized plan of training and intervention for each organization. Inclusion assessment includes physical Accessibility Audit, Attitudes of the employees and company policy.
  6. Train and refer people with disabilities to participating organizations, which will employ or provide services to an average of 10 people, increasing economic self-sufficiency of 900 people

 

The project is being implemented through four partners:

  1. Centre for Handicapped (CFH), Kandy
  2. Jaffna Jaipur Centre for Disability Rehabilitation (JJCDR)
  3. Navajeevana, Tangalle
  4. Organisation for the Rehabilitation of the Handicapped (ORHAN), Vavuniya.
